SOAC recognizes and supports the critical role the general public plays in our community’s chain of survival upon encountering a medical emergency, car accident and a wide variety of emergencies.

The South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, an American Safety and Health Institute Training Center, offers a variety of American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) and American Heart Association (AHA) emergency medical training, emergency preparedness training and community outreach programs for the general public as well as Basic Life Support Courses and refresher programs for emergency response personnel.

Training Division instructors consist of New York State certified instructor coordinators, emergency medical technicians, and AHA and ASHI certified instructors.

TAKING THE RIGHT COURSE FOR A JOB REQUIREMENT AND/OR EMPLOYMENT...

If you plan to attend training sessions for potential employment, or as a job requirement, it's important to enroll in the applicable class. THE EMPLOYER may have requirements as to which class you will need and which agency your certification must be from. The courses offered by South Orangetown Ambulance Corps are from one of two certifying agencies - the American Heart Association ("AHA") and the American Safety & Health Institute ("ASHI"). Your EMPLOYER may require you, for example, to have an ASHI CPR card and an AHA Card will not be what you need or your EMPLOYER may require you, for example, to have an AHA CPR card and an ASHI Card will not be what you need. ALL COURSES require a full deposit of the fees at least two weeks prior to the date of the class. The classes have a nominal fee which includes books and other course materials. Fees are payable by check to "SOAC" and the memo line should be "Attention Training Division" with the date of the class noted. Fees are non-refundable but may be applied against a future course in the event you can not attened a class, space permitting. All classes will start on time and late arrivers will not be permitted into a class that has commenced. Late attendees may have their fee applied against future classes, space permitting. Registration for each class is limited.

COURSE LOCATION:The South Orangetown Ambulance Corps Training Division provides classes throughout the year. Unless otherwise noted, classes are held at the South Orangetown Ambulace Corps Headquarters and EMS Training Center at 70 Independence Avenue in Tappan.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

Medical Professional Classes:

In general: These classes are designed for EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses, Lifeguards and others in the health care field.

(1) Basic Life Support Full Certification Class (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION:: The full certification class teaches professional level CPR and AED and runs 8 hours. Skills and tests are included. The fee for his course is $50. The fee inlcudes all materials, . The fee includes all materials, including the certification card and books.

(2) Basic Life Support Re-Certification Class (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: The re-certification class reviews professional level CPR and AED and runs 8 hours. Skills and tests are included. The fee for his course is $40. The fee includes all materials, including the certification card and books.

Community Classes:

In general: These classes are designed for non-medical persons to learn skills to help the general public feel comfortable in an emergency and when to call 911.

(3) Adult CPR (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: Skills to know when to call 911 and begin CPR on people over the age of puberty. Use of AED and the use of barrier devices (Masks) is also covered. Course averages 4 hours and the fee is $25. Book and card are included. (Max. 10 People per class)

(4) Child CPR (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: Skills to know when to call 911 and begin CPR on children over the age of one. Use of AED and the use of barrier devices (Masks) is also covered. Course averages 4 hours and the fee is $25. Book and card are included. (Max. 10 People per class)

(5) Infant CPR (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: Skills to know when to call 911 and begin CPR on newborns and infants up to the age of one year old . Use of barrier devices (Masks) is also covered. Course averages 4 hours and the fee is $25. Book and card are included. (Max. 10 People per class)

(6) First Aid (ASHI and AHA offered)

DESCRIPTION: This program provides the bystander or victim with minimal or no medical equipment to access and begin initial care for a person who has been injured. This class covers first aid for both children and adults. It is recommended for teams in business and industry, school bus drivers, child care workers, teachers, parents, babysitters and anyone else who desires to help another human in an emergency. Class is 4 hours. Hands on time is included. Fee $25. Book is provided, card provided when passing the test. (Max. 20 People per class)

(7) Babysitting Safety Training

DESCRIPTION: Class for boys and girls age 11 and up. Includes CPR for infants and children and first aid. Child safety instruction, feeding, bathing, diapering are also included. Some time is spent on how to set up a babysitting business. Class is also useful for children who are beginning to stay home alone. It is recommended that pre teens and teens do not baby sit alone until they are 16 years old but this class prepares them to be a mothers helper and develop their skill to baby sit. Class is 8 hours. Note this class is often broken up into two or three sessions. All sessions must be attended to obtain certificate. Fee $10

(8) Emergency Preparedness

DESCRIPTION: Lecture and power point on how to prepare for emergencies that may keep you housebound for 3 or more days or what is needed if you have to evacuate your home due to storms or other emergencies. Class lasts approximately 1 hour with time for questions and answerers afterwards. Fee $10

(9) Pet First Aid & CPR

DESCRIPTION: Pets are notlittle people. This class will teach you the correct way to handle, restrain and treat pets who become ill, injured or are in need of resuscitation and medical care. You will also learn what you need to have on hand at home for you pet's first aid kit. This class is taught by Pam Sprotsy, EMT-D and Licensed Vet Technician. Fee $25
