SOAC Training Center
SOAC has been an authorized ASHI/HSI Training Center for over 20 years. Our instructors are all BLS level instructors or higher and have all been New York State Certified EMTs. You will be learning life-saving CPR and practical First Aid skills from individuals who have first-hand experience and keep current on the latest emergency medical information and skills.
All our classes include hands-on, instructor-led skill sessions, a student book, and a certification card valid for 2 years. In addition to CPR AED and First Aid, we also offer BLS CPR, a combined CPR/First Aid course, Bloodborne Pathogens training, and other training course options. While the majority of our classes are ASHI/HSI programs, some of our instructors are also certified through American Heart Association centers and can offer AHA Heartsaver and BLS programs on request.
We offer monthly CPR AED and Basic First Aid classes open to anyone in the community.
For groups of 6 or more, we are happy to schedule a private class for you.
Please email Training@soacems.org to inquire.
Are you in need of volunteers?Have You Ever Witnessed A Medical Emergency And Wanted To Help But Didn’t Know How? The First Step Is Wanting To Help… The Next Step Is Letting Us Help You Do It. You too can join with dedicated members of our community…your neighbors, to help ANSWER THE CALL in our community as an EMS First Responder. PLEASE HELP US HELP THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE BECOME AN EMS VOLUNTEER
What kind of people are you looking for?Being an EMS volunteer requires commitment and a willingness to meet the challenges of saving lives and caring for people in our community in times of crisis. We’re looking for Adult Corps and Youth Division riding members as well as members of the community who would like to assist in an Administrative or Training Division capacity. Our critical need is for riding crew members. As a riding member, along the way you'll learn lifesaving, communications and leadership skills. Plus, you’ll develop the type of self-confidence, compassion and emergency preparedness that only emergency workers can experience and you’ll find yourself making a real difference in people’s lives
Do I need any training or certification to join?WE WILL TRAIN YOU. New members undergo an orientation program designed to acquaint a person to our EMS operation, equipment and to satisfy required OSHA and HIPPA training. In addition, all new members receive basic training in first aid, professional rescuer CPR and automated external defibrillation. Volunteers interested in becoming a Corps Driver receive basic emergency vehicle operator driving training. Trainees then ride on the ambulance as a vital part of the ambulance crew to gain field training experience. Trainee Crew Members that are interested in pursuing more knowledge and training in the emergency medical services field are offered free New York State Department of Health EMS Training as Certified First Responders or Emergency Medical Technicians. The vital need of the Corps and Community is to have our responders trained as Drivers and EMTs to form our crews. Corps members are also continually provided with continuing education through our Training Division and other EMS Training organizations in the County and State.
What will be my time commitment? We understand “free time” these days is at a premium so our training and scheduling is flexible, allowing for members to pick hours and shifts that are convenient for them, day or night, during the week and/or on weekends. Many of our members do manage to volunteer for other community organizations while still giving time as an emergency responder with SOAC. We ask that you please plan on volunteering a minimum total of 12 hours a month to help keep our ambulances staffed. If you have more time to offer… we’ll take it! A small amount of your time can make a life saving difference.
What will my membership look like?South Orangetown Ambulance Corps EMS operates a “state of the art” fleet of emergency vehicles with cutting edge equipment. We respond from our newly refurbished and constructed, EMS Headquarters and Training Center in Tappan. The biggest benefit of membership in the Corps is the ability to help a neighbor or stranger in their greatest time of need and the sense of accomplishment and self satisfaction when they turn to you to say “THANK YOU”. The Corps is a big family where life long friendships are built and you work side by side with fellow members who share the same willingness and dedication to help care for our community. South Orangetown Ambulance has recognized the significant contributions our volunteers make to our organization and to our community. We have many members who go above and beyond the minimum that we expect of our members and as an incentive to them and as a token of gratitude, our members receive a few ‘perks’ for their service. SOAC provides its members with: Uniforms Training Awards Paid Educational Conference Opportunities Building Use for Special Personal Events A Pension Program Advantages of our Corps Incentive and Appreciation Program and SOAC STORE New In Headquarters Fitness Room and Equipment Wide Variety of Social Activities Members are also entitled to Property Tax Reductions, Orangetown Golf Pass, and Merchant Discounts through Rockland County’s Volunteer Incentive Program
